Getting Around

Buenos Aires is a big city …. and some days the traffic is unbelievable, but compared with home it’s super cheap to get around. I figured out the Subte as soon as I got here and taking a Taxi is natural, you just stand on the corner and put your hand out, down and out …. up and out is for the bus, but the bus or ‘Colectivo’ was a little more intimidating. What if I get on and it doesn’t go where I want? Finally I found a website for the bus …. you drop the pin where you are and another where you want to go and it gives you all the options there and return. Only one problem …. some buses have more than one route with the same #, it is similar but not the same, I figured that out the hard way! But then I realized …. I’m not going anywhere that far and if I get lost I can take a taxi … seriously, $25.00 pesos gets you a long way and that’s about 5 bucks. Bus fare is $1.60 or $1.70 or $1.50, you actually tell the driver how much you are paying, seriously! The Subte is $2.50, and avoids traffic, but doesn’t always go where you need and can be absolutely packed …. like you can’t even push your way into the car!

Living without a car has been a fairly easy transition in a place with inexpensive options for transportation. This city is alive well into the morning and waiting for the bus at 2:30am is not a scary lonely prospect, there are usually 15 or 20 other people waiting there with you. Recently I’ve come across a city website that gives you travel options based on an address, either walking, driving or bus. You enter the addresses and search, it comes up with countless options there and back and even combines the Subte with Colectivo, ¡Esta Bien!
